Thursday, September 8, 2022 –Kenya Kwanza’s co-principal Moses Wetang’ula has won speaker position in the National Assembly in a contest that was headed into round two.
Communicating this news today Thursday September 8 evening, Acting Clerk Serah Kioko said the former Bungoma County Senator won the election after Azimio la Umoja’s Kenneth Marende withdrew from the contest in second round.
“I hereby declare Moses Wetang’ula as the 8th speaker of the National Assembly,” acting clerk, Serah Kioko announced.
This saw former speaker Justin Muturi quickly move to hand over mandate to his successor who will now be the official Assembly speaker.
“As you assume the office and embark on discharging the duties of the speaker, I trust that you will find this set of past rulings by your predecessors most useful. Congratulations Mr. speaker,” Mr. Justin Muturi noted
Wetang’ula who is also the Ford Kenya Party boss trounced Marende who had been fronted by Azimio la Umoja camp in a race that took the whole day to wind up.
By the time of preparing this article, Wetang’ula had garnered a total of 215 votes against Marende’s 130 votes; and one vote was recorded as spoilt.
To win the race first round, one had to have atleast 230 votes out of 346, but when the second round was announced, Marende developed cold feet and withdrew.
This was happening just hours after Azimio’s candidate, Kalonzo Musyoka, also pulled out unannounced at the Senate level hence handing Amason Kingi of Kenya Kwanza clean win.
