Friday, February 16, 2024 –Azimio la Umoja Party leader Raila Odinga will not take part in local politics once he starts his journey for the African Union post.
Raila will be forced to tone down on high octane local politics and focus his energy on the African Continent matters.
That, if he is lucky to be picked and elected, Mr. Odinga, who was speaking in his local language on Thursday 15, remarked that he will stop meddling into local politics for a period of only four years he will be in the office.
In his quest to succeed Moussa Faki Mahamat, who is retiring this year after serving for a period of two terms as enshrined in the African Union AU Constitution, Odinga wants support from Africa leaders among them; Samai Suluhu of Tanzania, Yoweri Museveni from Uganda, and Rwandan Paul Kagame among many others from around Africa.
If he wins, he will again vie in 2028 for the second-term that will run for another four-year period upto 2032.
There are elections to be held this year in July which he needs to first win and, should he win this, obviously he will have to quit local politics for years.
“It means that I am going to work for Africa for the period that I’ll be in that office. It doesn’t mean that I will not participate in Kenyan politics forever, it is only during that period,” Raila told Citizen TV.
AU Code of Conduct
Reading Code of Conduct in the AU charter, the holder of that position of Chairman must move back from local politics and focus his energy on running the continent.
He is also required to maintain a neural stand all through and across African nations so that bias is not detected at any point.
And, unless, he announces officially his resignation from AU, he or she will not be allowed to take up any other corporate or public appointment.
The chairman will, however, be allowed to cast his vote in any home election despite holding the plum role at the AU.
A total of fifty-five member states are needed to support his bid.
