Why CS Kagwe was not welcomed in Kakamega. Details emerge

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya ordered bringing down of several kiosks in town so as to clear streets for a visiting cabinet secretary. It has now emerged.

On Saturday August 8, reports were rife that hundreds of local traders had camped outside Governor Wycliffe Oparanya’s offices located in town along the Kakamega-Webuye highway to vent their frustrations with his administration.

Hundreds of kiosks were demolished, prior to Kagwe’s tour, in a ruthless process that was allegedly meant to make sure the CS does not have any view of them.

CS Kagwe who had arrived in Kakamega from Kisumu where he spent his night, was then forced to reroute to Mumias level 4 hospital after learning of the protests which had erupted in Kakamega town. It was reported that youths were armed with stones ready to pelt his convoy.

They accused their governor of being heartless at the expense of the poor traders just because he was wielding power and enjoying high connections with the Jubilee administration.

Mutahi Kagwe and the Council of Governors’ Chair started their tours across Western region on Friday August 7th with an aim of assessing the level of preparedness in hospitals amid increasing numbers of Covid-19 cases in the country.

Protesters also wanted to know how their County government was spending the money they received from the national government to combat the fast spreading virus.

“I visit this hospital every week on Monday and afterwards, I send a report to Oparanya, indicating the equipment that is needed. Currently, two or three doctors have Coronavirus…Hence, I have decided that boardroom meetings are not working and that is why we are here,” a local politician lamented.

This is happening just a day after the governor, while in Kisii on Friday, called upon relevant authorities to investigate how the funds received in counties was being spend. Video/Courtesy-
