Why Kalonzo did not Speak During Kibaki Send off

Tuesday, May 3, 2022 –Former President Mwai Kibaki’s family did not have space for Kalonzo Musyoka to address the gathering during Kibaki’s burial service because they did not want more politics.

Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri, Anthony Muheria, while addressing the matter on Citizen Tv on Monday May 2, noted that whatever happened was as per the wishes of the family.

The clergy added that the the family was satisfied with what transpired and the complains from politicianswas expected.

“We gave a worthy send-off to the third President as a country.  As a result, we had to forgo certain things that surely some people would feel were amiss but we tried our best in the circumstances to honour Kibaki,” he stated.

In the service, top leaders in the country – President Uhuru Kenyatta, his newfound ally Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto – all had a chance to address the mourners at Nyayo Stadium as well as in the rural of Othaya Constituency.

“The family of the late President Mwai Kibaki had expressly stated that they did not want political speeches and we respected that. In fact, the tributes were meant to be less than they were,” the bishop added.

Interestingly, the few who got a chance to speak used the opportunity to throw political barbs at their rivals; a notable case being Deputy President William Ruto who seized the opportunity to disparage the existing Handshake friendship between Mr. Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Hearse carrying Mwai Kibaki remains.

“I think a befitting send-off to all of us as we celebrate the third president is for us to go into this elections and make sure the elections will be peaceful and that it won’t be necessary to have handshakes.

“I think we owe it to President Mwai Kibaki as we send him off,” Ruto stated.

Kenya Kwanza leadership now claims that the former Vice president Kalonzo not speaking at the funeral was intentionally planned to undermine him in Azimio.

They have opined that the former VP was being deliberately cut to size despite the fact that he was Kibaki’s Vice President.
