Monday, July 25, 2022 –Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition Secretariat Spokesman Prof Makau Mutua has revealed the major reason they advised their boss Raila Odinga not to attend Tuesday debate with rival, William Ruto.
In a televised interview on Spice FM today morning Monday July 25, the vocal Odinga aide observed that Raila’s presence on the same platform with the DP would amount to endorsing Ruto’s poor leadership style.
He argued that they reached the boycott solution after long and thorough consultations with their lawyers and stakeholders.
”We made this particular decision after a long discussion. It was not easy to just abandon something as important as this overnight. You know Raila has supported this before. In 2013 and 2017 he showed up. They never showed up,” Mutua recounted.
He also reminded viewers that William Ruto and his running mate Rigathi Gachagua are not binded by law and have a lot to do to clear their mess before they can share same debate with Mr. Odinga.
The professor also said if he was asked, he would not have allowed Odinga’s running mate, Martha Karua, to debate with Rigathi Gachgua; but it had already happened and now water under the bridge.
The Sunny University intellectual further observed that Rigathi broke so many debate rules with reckless abandon; and definately Ruto will be worse if he shared a platform with Odinga.
Mutua, however, said the country should prepare for a live interaction session with Raila where they will have an opportunity to hear a lot from him. The alternative event will be held at Jericho Town Hall, Nairobi.
