Friday, March 19. 2021 -Machakos Senatorial candidate Agnes Kavindu has been declared the winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC.
The Wiper Democratic Party candidate garnered a total of 104,342 votes against her second competitor Urbanus Ngengele of the United Democratic Alliance UDA Party who got only 19,726.
This is from the race that saw 11 candidates contest to take over the seat which once belonged to Johnston Muthama who has since joined hands with DP William Ruto under a completely new outfit UDA Party. He is the Chairman and the founding member.
Other candidates who ran include Maendeleo Chap Chap Party candidate John Mutua Katuku who silently withdrew from the race after he was persuaded to do so by some outside forces. It was claimed the Statehouse prevailed upon him to step down.
When reached for a comment, Party leader Dr. Alfred Mutua defended that this was done in order to give DP Ruto a hard time to win the race.
The Thursday exercise was however characterized by low voter turnout because it was conducted on a weekday when people are busy at work.
“There are attempts of bribery, but they will not be allowed to continue. Everybody is alert,” Kavindu complained on Thursday.
Machakos Senate seat fell vacant after the late Senator Boniface Kabaka was, under mysterious circumstances, found dead in a city hotel last December.
