Tuesday, May 16, 2023 –Court in Bungoma has cleared Eliud Wekesa, alias Yesu wa Tongaren after finding no fault with his religious conduct.
The self-styled Jesus of Tongaren walked out of the court a free man on Tuesday May 16 after the prosecution said they had found no evidence against him.
Mr Wekesa, leader of New Jerusalem Church, had spent five days in a local police cell as detectives investigated alleged offences against him including cult activities.
Among other charges, the man of cloth was accused of running a religious cult in Tongaren area, purporting to be Jesus Christ, teaching radical ideologies to his followers, some of whom are minors, as well as practising and promoting money laundering.
He had, however, denied all the charges and told the court that he has never forced anyone to fast; neither had he stopped children from going to school like his counterpart Paul Mackenzie.
In a report by the Star, Roots Party Leader George Wajackoyah represented Eliud Wekesa alias Yesu wa Tongaren in court.
Wakackoyah, with two other lawyers, mounted a defense where Yesu wa Tongaren was accused of unlawful operation of an unregistered society, radicalisation and money laundering.
The embattled preacher had on May 10 said he will not need lawyers if arraigned over his church activities.
He exuded confidence that he had not broken any law and he shall be set free once the interrogation is complete.
“If I am arraigned, I don’t plan to have any physical lawyer to defend me but instead my lawyers will be the sun and the moon since before God I have done nothing wrong,” he said.
At some point, the prosecution had also attempted to declare him mentally unstable asking the court to grant them permission to allow them look into his mental state before they can resume sessions.
